It is with a sad heart that we report the passing of Brother Luke Spaseff '87 on February 1, 2017. Luke was diagnosed colon cancer and fought hard for four years before ending his battle at home with his friends and family at his bedside.

Luke graduated from Steelton High School in 1980 before coming to Penn State and pledging Phi Sig in 1980. He spent seven years at Penn State, graduating in Economics in 1987. He was universally respected and liked as a brother, who was always there to lend a helping hand, could laugh at himself with the best of them, and was a great big brother to younger brothers too numerous to count. He served many leadership positions at Phi Sig including Social Chairman, Inductor, and Sentinel.

After leaving Penn State, he spent the summer in Ocean City, Md. with other Phi Sig brothers and found his true calling in law enforcement as a patrolman with the Ocean City Police Department. He went on to become a Pennsylvania State Trooper from 1988 until his retirement in 2013.

In the early 1990s, he met the love of his life, Robin, had a fun-filled wedding full of Phi Sigs, and soon after welcomed his twin daughters, Amanda and Taylor, into the world in 1993.

Luke lived a life of service to his community and dedication to his family near Harrisburg, Pa., most recently in Goldsboro, Pa. Luke also stayed in close contact with many of his Phi Sig brothers including regular trips for football games, several reunions, and other Phi Sig gatherings. He recently welcomed 15 grateful brothers into his home to share some brotherhood, relive old memories and rekindle old friendships. He was in good spirits and enjoyed sharing his stash of rare whiskey bottles. All Phi Sigs who were lucky enough to get to know Luke knew him as a selfless, good-natured guy who genuinely cared about others. He was a father figure and role model in the way he lived his life and ended it. He will be remembered for years to come for his crooked grin, his love of a good whiskey and cigar, his antics at Phi Sig, Ocean City and Roxborough, the Winnebago, and his love and dedication to his family, his friends, his alma mater, and his country.

Per Luke’s wishes, a scholarship will be established in his memory at Phi Sigma Kappa, Kappa Chapter. Donations can be made to Phi Sigma Kappa Association of State College, C/O Ben Jarmul (Treasurer), 243 Cypress Knoll Drive, Sewickley, PA 15143.
