Dear Alumni Brothers of Kappa,

I was recently asked to give the alumni an update on the active chapter. As chapter advisor for the last four years, I am proud to say the chapter has strengthened significantly. The active brothers of the Kappa chapter have shown great character as they have worked together to improve not only their internal brotherhood but also their public appearance.

I believe that they are viewed as a strong philanthropic and community-minded group not only by the Penn State Greek community, but as the State College community as a whole. An example of this comes to mind as recent as this past weekend when the active members volunteered their time with either a canning trip to raise money for THON or stayed back in State College to help with the Elves' Gift Shop at our local High School benefiting a local cancer assistance charity. Even our upperclassmen were volunteering their time, some with less than two weeks left as active brothers. I feel this character growth has not only shown through on their community service but with their internal fraternity involvement.

This coming Thursday we will be initiating seven new brothers. This does seem like a low number, but with the recent changes with the recruiting structure at Penn State I feel they have still done a great job. This fall over twenty bids were given out. The rush chairs did a great job even though the Penn State structure was very difficult to work with. Sadly, it seems like ever year the university continues to make it more difficult for rush and the whole Greek community in general. The costs and regulations have become so great that saying that is it difficult is putting it lightly.

Our current president, Matt McClelland, has done a fantastic job this semester. His term is coming to an end because he is graduating in just a few weeks. Chris DeCock will take over as President and has agreed to make his term a full year (two semesters). I am very happy that Chris has made this commitment. I would like to see our presidents commit to a full year term rather than just a semester. I am also glad to see this starting with the spring semester.

Overall I feel the chapter is headed in the right direction. I would be happy to expand on these topics or answer any of your questions. Please feel free to contact me via email (This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.) or cell phone (814-574-1968).

Lastly, I would like to thank each of you for the renovations to the chapter house. It has been a joy to see the house updates and improvements. Thank you for giving the actives such a great house to live in.

Fraternally,

Michael R. Martin

Damn Proud.
